There’s a Sunflower ‘Field of Dreams’ in Poughkeepsie
If you are a fan of sunflower fields, there is a spectacular one in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
I was running around on Sunday and wound up on Degarmo Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie. I have been on this road thousands of times, but never noticed the amazing field of sunflowers right by the Overlook Drive In.
How could I have missed this before? Maybe I have always had my eyes on the road and just drove past it. The field is a sunflower farm for Hudson Valley Cold Pressed Oils and they have been in business since 2014. Now I don’t feel so bad. I have only missed the sunflower field for 3 years!
According to Hudson Valley Cold Pressed Oil’s website, Kevin Haight wanted to start a bio-fuel company and decided that sunflower oil would be a great way to go. It was pretty easy to extract and the yield from the plant was abundant. His plan changed after tasting it.
After tasting the oil and having discussions with his wife, brother and sister-in-law about the nutrition benefits, culinary uses and outright amazing flavor of the cold pressed sunflower oil Kevin’s idea of burning it for biodiesel became obsolete.
Kevin and his brother Jeff started the Hudson Valley Cold Pressed Oil company and their products are sold all over the place. Pick up a bottle or two and try cooking with local sunflower oil. They also make a line of skin care products which look really great. Oh and take a ride on Overlook Road in Poughkeepsie, but do it soon if you want to take a look at the Sunflower Field of Dreams.
