Also on Monday morning @ 9:45:  Lisa Napoli, Journalist and Author of "RAY & JOAN: The Man Who Made the McDonald's Fortune and the Woman Who Gave It All Away."

Ray Kroc was peddling franchises around the country for a fledgling hamburger stand in the 1950s—McDonald’s, it was called—when he entered a St. Paul supper club and encountered a beautiful young piano player who would change his life forever.

Just as their relationship twisted and turned dramatically, the fortunes of Ray’s new

business came perilously close to failure.  Ultimately Ray wrested control of McDonald’s from the original founders; in short order the successful burger stand in the desert of California would be transformed into a stock market sensation and international brand. At the same time, Joan was separately playing her own part in the building of McDonald’s, both as the wife of an early franchisee and Ray’s secret confidante, a role she’d officially take on when they finally married, a dozen years after meeting, in 1969.

To the outside world, Ray and Joan were happy, enormously rich, and giving. But privately, Joan was growing troubled over Ray’s temper and dark secret, something she was reluctant to publicly reveal. And yet, this volatility paved the way for Joan’s transformation into one of the greatest philanthropists of our time. A force in the peace movement, she produced activist films, books, and music and ultimately gave away billions of dollars, including landmark gifts to the Salvation Army and NPR.

ABOUT Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Lisa Napoli has lived for the last dozen years in southern California, where she was inspired to write this book by a public artwork with a mysterious provenance. In her three decades as a journalist, she's worked for The New York Times, MSNBC, the public radio show Marketplace, and a variety of other outlets.  She's covered everything from presidential campaigns, to hacker conventions and a hostage standoff, to the dawn of the World Wide Web.

Tuesday, Nov. 15th @ 8:45 AM:  Laurence Bergreen, introducing new book "Casanova: The World of a Seductive Genius."

The definitive biography of the impoverished child, abandoned by his parents, who became the famous writer, notorious libertine, and self-invented genius whose name still resonates today: Giacomo Casanova.

Today, “Casanova” is a synonym for “great lover,” yet the real story of this remarkable figure is little known. Giacomo Casanova was raised by his maternal grandmother, an

illiterate peasant. His birthplace, Venice, was a republic in decline, reputedly the most debauched city in Europe. Casanova would add to the republic’s reputation. Over the course of his lifetime, he claimed to have seduced more than 100 women, among them married women, young women in convents, girls just barely in their teens, and in one notorious instance, his own illegitimate daughter.

Casanova came of age in a Venice filled with spies and informers. Naturally brilliant, he was intellectually curious and read forbidden books, for which he was jailed. He staged a dramatic escape from Venice’s notorious prison, the only person known to have done so. He then fled to France, where he invented the national lottery that still exists to this day. But, intemperate by nature, he made enemies at the French court. He crisscrossed Europe, landing for a while in St. Petersburg, where he was admitted to the court of Catherine the Great. He corresponded with Voltaire and met Mozart and Lorenzo da Ponte—assisting them as they composed the timeless opera Don Giovanni. And he wrote what many consider the greatest memoir of the era, the 12-volume Story of My Life.

ABOUT Laurence Bergreen is an award-winning biographer and historian.  His books have been translated into twenty-five languages worldwide. Among his books are biographies of Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, Louis Armstrong, Al Capone, and Irving Berlin. He has written for many national publications, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, Esquire, and Newsweek.  A frequent lecturer at major universities and symposiums, and, on occasion, aboard cruise ships, he has served as a featured historian for the History Channel.  Mr. Bergreen graduated from Harvard University in 1972.

Also on Tuesday morning @ 9:15:  Author Mary Higgins Clark, presenting the third thrilling novel in her "Under Suspicion" series:  Sleeping Beauty Killer.

The third thrilling installment in the bestselling Under Suspicion series from #1 New York Times bestselling author and “Queen of Suspense” Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke—television producer Laurie Moran puts everything on the line to help a woman she thinks was wrongfully convicted of murder.

Casey Carter was convicted of murdering her fiancé—famed philanthropist Hunter Raleigh

III—fifteen years ago. And Casey claims—has always claimed—she’s innocent. Although she was charged and served out her sentence in prison, she is still living “under suspicion.” She hears whispers at the grocery store. She can’t get a job. Even her own mother treats her like she’s guilty. Her story attracts the attention of Laurie Moran and the Under Suspicion news team—it’s Casey’s last chance to finally clear her name, and Laurie pledges to exonerate her.

With Alex Buckley taking a break from the show—cooling his potential romance with Laurie—Under Suspicion introduces a new on-air host named Ryan Nichols, a young legal whiz with a Harvard Law degree, Supreme Court clerkship, experience as a federal prosecutor, and regular stints on the cable news circuit. He’s got a big reputation and the attitude to match it. Ryan has no problems with steering—and stealing—the show, and even tries to stop Laurie from taking on Casey’s case because he’s so certain she’s guilty.

An egomaniacal new co-host, a relentless gossip columnist who seems to have all the dirt (and a surprising informant), and Casey’s longstanding bad reputation: Laurie must face this and more to do what she believes is right, to once and for all prove Casey’s innocence—that is, if she’s innocent… The Sleeping Beauty Killer will keep you guessing until the very end.

Next on Thursday morning @ 9:30:  Steven Johnson, New York Times Bestselling Author of "Wonderland: How Play Made the Modern World."

In six captivating sections—Fashion and Shopping, Music, Taste, Illusions, Games, and Public Space—Johnson reveals the ways garment design drives technological innovation; how early music boxes demonstrated advanced mechanical engineering and player pianos paved the way for the development of computer software; and how having a taste for spices from pepper to vanilla to cinnamon generated massive international trade.

Illuminating the history of ideas, Johnson shows how our desire for amusement has

shifted our perspective about public spaces and led to the creation of parks, zoos, taverns and coffeehouses, of all which have played a key role in revolutionizing society. In every case—from 19th century illusionists to today’s virtual reality—Johnson brilliantly shows how innovations come from unexpected places—including the technological breakthroughs of Snow White to the way that games (from chess to Spacewar!) have made possible crucial advancements in computing.
